Curley’s comes down

It’s taken 11 months but on Friday work finally began to rebuild Curley’s Pub at 431 Winthrop St.“I’m so happy to see this day,” Marianne Curley said, as she stood in front of an  excavator that was busily ripping apart the remnants of her beloved restaurant and pub.Looking back on that   morning last Memorial Day,  when an electrical fire ravaged the two-story building, Curley said she considered it to have been no less than a personal tragedy.But there has been a silver lining to her dark cloud of misfortune.It’s because of the fire, she said, that Curley’s Pub will reemerge not only new but truly improved.If it had been up to her and her husband and co-owner Bill, the business would have been open by now. But she said it took somewhat longer than expected getting the necessary permits from the city’s building department.There was also, she said, a three-month delay in being granted a hearing before the state’s handicap accountability board.Because of the rulings of that board, Curley said, not only will the new restaurant have handicapped-accessible bathrooms, it will for the first in its existence include a small elevator to transport wheelchair-bound patrons to the second-floor dining room.She also said the floor layout will be more accommodating to people who need a little extra space getting to and from their seats. Whereas the interior of the old Curley’s Pub was fairly cramped and oddly-shaped, the new one will be wide open with appreciably more room between tables.“It’s almost like a blessing to do it that way now,” Curley said.“I’m proud that now we’ll be able to reach out to more people so that they can enjoy what we offer.”“We had to make a negative a positive,” she added.Curley said of the 30 part- and full-time employees who used to work for her she is “absolutely” confidant that 10 of her core full-timers will be coming back.“We’ve kept in contact,” she said. “We were like family. I’ve missed them.”Curley also promised the menu will remain unchanged, saying that “if it’s not broke then don’t fix it.”The Curleys in 1990 bought what had been a barroom known as the Brass Button and added a restaurant. The only thing structurally to remain from the original building will be two walls, one of which contains a fireplace surrounded by bricks. That fireplace will now be gas-fired so that it can run year-round.The walls were retained to avoid being required by the city to install a new sewer line, she said.Octavio “Kevin” Melo, vice prescient of Taunton-based Premier Construction Inc., said it should take about six months to put up the new building.Curley disputes that. She said she hopes it will be sooner.Curley is also pleased that Bay State Pet & Garden Supply is relocating from further up Winthrop Street into a large building now under construction next to her property.“I’m really glad they’re moving,” she said.White’s Golf Studio, a sales and repair shop, occupies a small building behind the Curley’s Pub site and has remained open since the fire.Not long after the building burned a group of customers held a fundraiser that netted $10,000 to help the Curley’s rebuild. Because of their generosity and loyalty Marianne Curley said that one of two new windows to be installed in the front of the building will bear an inscription reading Friends of Curley’s Pub. cwinokoor@tauntongazette.com
